About Malaspina University-College

Located on beautiful Vancouver Island, Malaspina University-College has played an active role in the cultural, intellectual, and economic life of the central Vancouver Island region since 1969. The main campus is located in Nanaimo, and regional campuses have been established in Duncan and Parksville, as well as in Powell River on the B.C. mainland.

Malaspina University-College offers a range of undergraduate degrees, as well as a wide variety of career/technology programs leading to one-year certificates and two-year diplomas, many of which “ladder” into degree programs. Faculty at Malaspina place a strong emphasis on teaching and learning and also engage in research and scholarly activity.

Over the years Malaspina has grown into an institution that serves 10,400 credit students; an additional 2,000 students
are enrolled in specialized programs for business and industry, and about 10,000 students take general interest community education courses. Malaspina athletic teams traditionally place in the top in B.C. and Canada – with 31 provincial and six national titles won by Malaspina Mariners athletic teams.

Malaspina University-College has a strong commitment to internationalization and provides innovative opportunities for global understanding to its students, faculty and community, with access to exchanges, international field schools and practica for Canadian schools. Each year it welcomes more than 1,000 international students from more than 40 countries to its campus. Malaspina University-College delivers an MBA and International MBA in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire, in the United Kingdom. In the past two decades Malaspina has also become a leader in international education and contract training for business and industry.

Academic and campus services
Advising services, athletics, bookstore, child care, co-op education, counselling services, education technology centre, emergency phone system, financial aid and awards, first aid, food services, human rights adviser, international student support services, library, Nanaimo art gallery, student career/ employment centre, student newspaper, student society, student support services (services for students with disabilities, assessment services, career information, counselling services, First Nations student services, First Nations Student Services Centre, student-assisting-student program), study help, theatre.

First-year student programs
Campus tours, education technology centre, math centre, orientation day, study skills courses, welcome week, writing centre.

Housing
On-campus: Housing is available for 189 students in single furnished rooms at the Nanaimo campus. Floors in each building are co-ed. There is no meal plan. International students have access to a home-stay program through the International Student Support office. About 70 percent of residents are first-year students. Priority for rooms is given to returning students. Remaining rooms are allocated to first-year students on a first-come, first-served basis. Cost: $1,260 - $1,420 per semester.

Information technology
E-mail accounts are available free of charge. Students living off-campus and in residences need to sign up with a local Internet service provider to access the central computer system as well as the Internet.

Student assistance
Malaspina offers a total of approximately $475,000 in scholarships, awards, bursaries and tuition bursaries every year. For scholarships, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 7.50 (B+ to A-); for awards, students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 6.00 (B average), and meet other criteria specified by the donor. For bursaries, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 (C average) and demonstrate financial need. International students are eligible to apply for scholarships and awards, except those where financial need is a criterion.

Student exchange programs
Malaspina supports exchange programs, field schools, international practica and development projects and has sister-school agreements with Japan, Korea, and Thailand. Also Malaspina has educational alliances with schools from Taiwan, China, Mexico, India and Turkey, as well as Canadian/North American and Canadian/European student mobility projects.
