About
University of Alberta |
President’s
message
The University of Alberta welcomes new and exciting
challenges as our province enters its second century. By transforming
learning, leading in ground-breaking research and uplifting
society through new knowledge, leadership and service, the
University of Alberta aims to be one of the world’s
great universities.
A
Capital University
Opened in 1908 as a board-governed
public institution, the University of Alberta has grown to
be one of Canada’s foremost research-intensive universities,
with external research funding in 2004-05 of more than
$415 million. The University of Alberta
main campus and Campus Saint-Jean are located in Edmonton,
the vibrant, cosmopolitan capital of the province of Alberta.
In a metropolitan area with close to one million people, Edmonton
showed the fastest economic growth of Canada’s major
cities in 2004 when its economy increased by an impressive
6.2 per cent. In partnership with industry
and government, the University of Alberta plays a pivotal
role in advancing the economic prosperity of Edmonton and
Alberta. On July 1, 2004, the Augustana
Campus became the newest campus and faculty of the
University of Alberta. Augustana is located
in Camrose, Alberta, 90 kilometers southeast of Edmonton.
The
University of Alberta serves more than 35,500 students
in more than 200 undergraduate programs and 170 graduate programs.
Students enjoy an exceptional quality of life on a friendly
campus in a city that values creativity and innovation. The
University’s pioneering spirit inspires faculty and
students to advance knowledge through research, seek innovation
in teaching and learning and find new ways to serve the people
of Alberta and the world. |
