McGill appoints Ann Dowsett Johnston as new Vice-Principal

Ann
Dowsett Johnston, a leading Canadian journalist and advocate for
quality in higher education, has been appointed to the position
of Vice-Principal (Development, Alumni and University Relations)
of McGill University for a five-year term starting February 6, 2006.
Ms.
Dowsett Johnston is recognized as one of Canada’s powerful
voices in support of the cause of higher education. An award-winning
journalist and book editor with more than two decades of media and
communications experience, she has been a leading editor and writer
on issues related to higher education. Notably, she has been the
principal architect since 1992 of the Maclean’s university
rankings, Canada’s foremost authority on university rankings.
She also launched the Maclean’s Guide to Canadian Universities
in 1996, the Maclean’s Guide to Canadian Colleges in 1999
as well as other best-selling publications on higher education.
In
making the announcement, Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor
of McGill University, said that Ms. Dowsett Johnston "will
bring her creativity and energy to the thriving area of development,
alumni and university relations to build on McGill’s track
record of fund-raising success, to enhance relations with alumni,
volunteers and friends of McGill, and to play an essential role
in the fulfillment of McGill’s mission."
She
added that with Ms. Dowsett Johnston’s leadership, "McGill
will identify and maximize new development opportunities and implement
initiatives to help advance the University even further into the
top ranks of the world’s leading research and student centred
universities."
Professor
Munroe-Blum said: "This is a critical time for the University
as it finalizes its academic and institutional priorities for the
next several years and prepares for a major comprehensive campaign.
Ms. Dowsett Johnston brings to McGill a strong strategic sensibility
and a strong record of management expertise involving large teams
of professionals and complex issues."
