The University of British Columbia (UBC) invites applications
and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty
of Science. The University of British Columbia is the
third largest university in Canada and has been consistently
ranked among the top 50 universities in the world. Established
in 1908, UBC is a publicly supported, comprehensive
university comprising 17 faculties on two campuses,
11 schools, and 22 centres and institutes.

The
UBC Faculty of Science, which comprises nine Departments:
Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth and Ocean
Sciences, Mathematics, Microbiology and Immunology,
Physics and Astronomy, Statistics, and Zoology, is home
to some of the world’s leading researchers and
innovative teachers.
Faculty
members are at the cutting edge of science within a
wide array of specializations and interdisciplinary
research. Over the last five years, Faculty scientists
received a total of close to $310 million in research
funding, with a record amount of $80 million in this
past fiscal year.
There
are several new science research facilities either recently
completed or nearly completed, including the Life Sciences
Institute, the Fisheries Centre, and the Biodiversity
Centre. The Faculty includes 369 full time faculty members,
6,979 undergraduate students, and 1,042 graduate students.

Reporting to the Vice-President Academic and Provost,
the Dean is a member of the University’s senior
administration and the Executive Officer of the Faculty.
He/she will continue to develop the Faculty’s
vision and meet the goals articulated in the University’s
Trek 2010 vision document and the Academic Plan.
The
successful candidate will have outstanding academic
credentials, a distinguished research record, proven
leadership ability, a demonstrated focus on the student
experience, and a strong commitment to excellence in
research, education, and community outreach. The ability
to support and motivate research and learning activities,
a strategic and innovative leadership style, and excellent
interpersonal skills are essential.
The
appointment will ideally commence on July 1, 2006. Applications
